Regular intracity buses and taxi cars are defined as places where tobacco use is restricted, the Baku Transport Agency (BTA) told Trend on January 5.

The Agency has held a meeting with legal entities and individuals engaged in regular transportation of passengers. The meeting discussed issues related to the implementation of a number of measures stemming from the Law "On Restriction of Use of Tobacco Products.”

It was noted that this law is important for protecting the health of the population, promoting healthy lifestyle, children and youth’s growth and healthy development as well as reducing the impact of tobacco smoke on the environment.

BTA also noted at the meeting that in accordance with paragraph 1.12 of article 10 of the law, regular intracity buses and taxi cars were identified as places where tobacco use is restricted. The carriers were given appropriate instructions in order to fulfill the requirements of the law in a short time. In this regard, it was instructed to conduct explanatory work with drivers, to comply with ethical standards of behavior with passengers as well as to instruct them on safe driving.

The Agency informed the carriers that serious measures will be taken against those who do not comply with laws relating to the comfort and safety of passengers.

Smoking is among the most harmful habits of people around the world, including Azerbaijanis. About 47 percent of the country's population is smoking. On December 1, 2017, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted the Law “On Restriction of the Use of Tobacco Products” and in late December, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the application of this law.

In accordance with the law, smoking of cigarettes, hookah and electronic cigarettes in healthcare, science and education institutions, museums, libraries, cinemas, theaters, circus buildings, exhibition halls, sports venues, concerts and other mass events is prohibited. It is also forbidden to smoke in trade and social service facilities, administrative buildings of airports and sea (river) ports, at railway stations, bus stations, bus stops, in public transport, in taxis, etc.

Such prohibitions already exist in such countries as the U.S., Finland, Ukraine, Great Britain, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Syria, Egypt, etc.
