With the arrival of the second Saturday in April it’s trout season in Rhode Island.

Anglers were ready for the official 6:00 am start at trout-stocked freshwater locations all over the state.

While fishers were looking forward to hooking trout and reeling them in, some needed to be aware of a warning from the state regarding eating their catch.

The Rhode Island Department of Health warning that because of PFAS contamination fish caught in certain areas should not be consumed. "PFAS” stands for Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, sometimes called “forever chemicals.”

Specifically, said the Health Department, fish from Grills Preserve Pond in Bradford should not be eaten. It’s also cautioning to limit consumption of fish caught in the Pawcatuck River downstream of Burdickville Road in Hopkinton to no more than 1 meal per month.

For those fishing at Silver Spring Lake in North Kingstown, though, they are confident whether it’s dinner they’re catching, or catching and releasing. The clammy weather couldn't keep them away, one there telling NBC 10, "I mean I've seen colder but it's definitely damp out."

According to the Department of Environmental Management, trout season in Rhode Island runs through the end of February.
