The Odhiansalai police on Monday seized 60kg of banned tobacco products that were being smuggled in a car and arrested one person near Sonampalayam.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Law and Order R. Kalaivanan said in a release that the police based on a tip-off intercepted a car near Sonampalayam. While checking the car, the police team found various banned tobacco products concealed inside the vehicle. Ganaptlal, a resident of Thirumurugan Nagar, Nettapakkam, who was smuggling the banned items in the car was immediately arrested, he said.
The tobacco products were worth around ₹75,000, the SSP said adding that steps were being taken to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act more stringently in Puducherry.
