Glasgow man arrested after escaping from police cruiser

GLASGOW, Ky. – A Glasgow man is behind bars after authorities say he ran from a police cruiser while in custody.

According to a uniform citation, the Glasgow Police Department observed a vehicle traveling west on West Front Street when it failed to signal 100 feet before its turn.

The driver was identified as 37-year-old Jerry Bennett of Glasgow.

Police say after having Bennett step out of the vehicle, they discovered his license was suspended, and he had two active warrants for his arrest.

Bennett was placed under arrest and handcuffed behind his back.

Authorities say they placed Bennett in the back seat of the police cruiser.

While approaching the owner of the vehicle in the passenger seat, police say a female pulled up and advised she saw a male in handcuffs running west on West Front Street.

Police say they checked the back seat of the cruiser and saw that Bennett was missing.

Bennett was located a short time later on North Race Street, police say, where police ran after Bennett.

Authorities say Bennett was stopped and taken into custody without further incident.

During a search of the vehicle Bennett had occupied, police say they found suspected methamphetamine, a glass smoking pipe, scales and other drug paraphernalia.

Bennett faces charges of failure to or improper signal, rear license not illuminated, operating on a suspended or revoked operators license, failure to produce insurance card, second-degree escape, third-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, third or greater offense (methamphetamine) and drug paraphernalia – buy/possess,

He remains at the Barren County Detention Center.
