A haul of 3.7 million cigarettes has been seized at Dublin Port.

The find was made as part of a consignment of PVC windows and doors, following the search of a trailer that arrived on a vessel from Rotterdam.

The seizure was made as a result of risk profiling, and with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner.

The smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘Benson and Hedges’, have an estimated value of €3.3 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €2.6 million.

A Revenue spokeswoman said: "Investigations are ongoing. This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
