Traffic stop of bicyclist turns into drug bust in Lake County, report says
A man is behind bars after what could have been a routine traffic stop but turned into a drug bust, according to the Lady Lake Police Department.
On May 8, an officer with the Lady Lake Police Department observed 49-year-old Charles Duncan operating a dark-colored bicycle heading west on Griffin Avenue.
When the officer noticed the bike did not have a functioning rear red light, he attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
According to the officer, Duncan turned around, saw the patrol vehicle and began to pedal away, evading the stop.
After several detours down side streets and cutting through businesses in an attempt to flee law enforcement, Duncan eventually dropped to his knees, giving himself up to the officers, police said.
As a result, a search of Duncan turned up an unopened Marlboro cigarette package.
During a canvas of the area, police discovered an open pack of Marlboro cigarettes on the ground, the same style as the ones located on Duncan’s person.
Inside the open pack were a few unlit cigarettes, a broken glass smoking pipe and burnt white residue. There was also a clear plastic bag containing a white, rock-like substance.
Police said an agency conducted a field test to determine what the substance inside the bag was, and it tested positive for approximately 1.3 grams of crack cocaine, including packaging.
Duncan was arrested and transported to Lake County Jail.
Duncan was also issued a uniform traffic citation for fleeing law enforcement and is aware that if he does not appear at his mandatory court appearance later this month, a warrant for failure to appear could be issued for his arrest.
