American Lung Association Applauds Obama Administration's Power Plant Carbon Pollution Standard Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 20, 2013)

Harold P. Wimmer National President and CEO of the American Lung Association who attended the speech by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy at the National Press Club issued the following statement:

“I was pleased to join Administrator Gina McCarthy today as she discussed the urgent need to address the health impacts of our changing climate. The American Lung Association is heartened to hear that EPA is moving ahead with the power plant carbon pollution standards for new plants. It is an important step forward for public health.”

“Power plant pollution kills and makes people sick. Enforcing existing clean air protections, such as the Power Plant Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, will dramatically improve public health. By proposing standards for carbon pollution from plants that will be built in the future, the EPA is setting the stage for the next generation of America’s power plants to be the least toxic and most modern in the world. It makes no sense to allow power plants to emit unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air.”

“Addressing carbon pollution will help protect public health. Higher temperatures can enhance the conditions for ozone (smog) formation. Even with the steps that are in place to reduce smog, evidence warns that changes in climate are likely to increase the risk of unhealthy smog levels in the future in large parts of the United States. More smog means more childhood asthma attacks and complications for others with lung disease.”

“We support the EPA’s carbon pollution standards and will encourage the public to weigh in during the comment period. We urge the EPA to set a final standard within a year and to additionally get to work on establishing a standard for existing carbon pollution sources. Anything less shortchanges our children and our health.”
