Lung Association Says Americans Have a Right to Know When Ozone Pollution Reaches Unhealthy Levels

Washington, D.C. (August 29, 2014)

In response to the final Policy Assessment released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone, Paul Billings, Senior Vice President of the American Lung Association, issued the following statement:

"EPA’s assessment confirms what the health and medical community long ago concluded: the current ozone standard fails to protect public health as the Clean Air Act requires. Americans have been living with an outdated standard for far too long.

"Air quality alerts based on the current ozone standard often mislead the public by indicating that pollution levels are safe when the numerous scientific studies show such levels can harm children with asthma and millions of other vulnerable people.

"This issue is simple. The American people have a right to know the truth about the air we breathe so we can take steps to protect ourselves. Ozone pollution – even at levels currently deemed to be safe – increases the risk of premature death, asthma attacks, and hospital admissions and emergency room visits.

"The Lung Association calls on the EPA to propose a strong standard that tells the public the truth and meets the requirements of the Clean Air Act to protect public health with a margin of safety. The Lung Association recommends a standard no less protective than the one the health and medical community first recommended seven years ago—60 parts per billion."
