NASCAR Driver Mackena Bell Joins American Lung Association to Share Her Personal Connection to Lung Disease

Washington, D.C. (December 13, 2013)—

A KN Pro Series East driver – and candidate for KN East Rookie of the Year– Bell has direct family ties to both lung cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis).

“I feel a real connection to NASCAR fans, and care about their health. Smoking causes lung cancer and worsens other lung diseases,” explained Bell. “We want to help people understand that even if you are smoking now, you can change that, and by quitting, you improve your health from that day forward.”

As a female driver, she feels a special commitment to fight to protect women’s health, to protect her fans, particularly against lung cancer.

“Most women probably don’t know that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in America. Lung cancer actually kills more women each year than breast cancer. And more and more women who never smoked are being diagnosed with lung cancer, so anyone is at risk,” she said.

“The Lung Association has been fighting lung cancer for more than 50 years. I’m excited to work with the Lung Association to help people learn more about how to prevent, diagnose early, manage and treat lung disease.”

Recently, Bell shared her story with the American Lung Association National Board during their meeting in Atlanta. Earlier this year she joined the American Lung Association in Virginia, for their Christmas Seals^® Campaign kickoff in Richmond and now sports a Christmas Seals sticker on her race car.
