UNESCO commits to supporting Equatorial Guinea to bring its national heritage to the global stage

With the support of UNESCO, Equatorial Guinea is taking a decisive first step forward in the development and submission of its first Tentative List, a key milestone in identifying sites that may be inscribed on the World Heritage List in the future.

Still the only African country without a Tentative List and one of the only nine countries with no sites on the World Heritage List in Africa, Equatorial Guinea is now moving forward with ambition and determination. From 10 to 18 August 2025, UNESCO’s mission will lead capacity-building workshops for the national authorities, along with technical exchanges, and undertake field visits to potential sites proposed by the State Party, such as Monté Alen National Park, Iglesia de Batete, and the Caldera de Luba Scientific Reserve.

Two experienced international experts, with complementary expertise in natural and cultural heritage, are supporting the national authorities and key stakeholders, in close collaboration with the Equatorial Guinea National Commission for UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Equatorial Guinea to UNESCO.

With the financial support from the governments of Japan, France, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this mission contributes to the achievements of UNESCO’s Priority Africa (2022–2029), in particular Flagship Programme 3: “Fostering cultural heritage and capacity development.”

UNESCO remains fully committed to supporting Equatorial Guinea and its partners in their continued efforts to achieve, shortly, the country’s first inscription on the World Heritage List.
